MDC Los Angeles also known as Los Angeles Metropolitan Detention Center is a federal jail located in Downtown L.A. at 535 North Alameda Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90012. MDC L.A. is operated by the Western Region of the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), division of the U.S. Department of Justice. MDC houses approximately 900 male & female federal inmates, pretrial detainees and probation violators charged with Federal Crimes in the U.S. District Court For the Central District of California going the trial process or awaiting sentencing, or have been denied bail by a Federal Judge and deemed a flight risk or threat to the community.

Housing units normally have 4 telephones for inmate use. Inmates are allowed a maximum of 300 minutes per month January thru October, and 400 minutes in November and December. Inmates are housed in two man or three man cells with bunk-beds and toilets. Showers are centrally located most housing units for inmate use. TV’s and other recreation facilities are included in each housing unit.

Staff and contract chaplains provide for inmate religious services for Jewish, Christian and Muslim faiths on Sundays and religious holidays. Medical and psychological health care is provided BOP medical staff, U.S. Public Health Services Officers and outside contract physicians.

All MDC Los Angeles inmates in general population are able to purchase items in the commissary and have a monthly spending limit of $320

The Federal Public Defender for the Central District of California is the largest Federal Public Defenders Office in the U.S. It maintains offices in Los Angeles, Santa Ana and Riverside with over 240 employees, including 92 attorneys, 26 paralegals, 38 investigators and more than 85 supporting staff members.

The Public Defender provides criminal defense services to defendant’s being charged with a crime violating U.S. Law by the U.S. Attorney’s Office and unable to afford a private lawyer of their own.

U.S. District Court
Central District of California

The United States District Court for the Central District of California has 4 Federal Courthouses. There are two in Los Angeles, one in Santa Ana, and one in Riverside. They hold criminal and civil judicial proceeding for federal cases that originated in the following California counties:

Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange, Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura.

The Courthouses are open Monday thru Friday from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM and closed on weekends and federal holidays.

The U.S. District Court for the Central District of California has a total of 34 Federal U.S. District Judges and 25 fulltime U.S. Magistrate judges. The Current Chief Judge is as of May 2016 is the Honorable George H. King. King was appointed to the Federal Bench by President Bill Clinton in April 1995.

Courthouse security is provided the U.S. Marshal’s Service at all facilities. Those entering the building are searched and required to walk through metal detectors and subject to pat down searches.
